Throughout this course we have learned about a number of different types of crime (violent crime, sexual crime, white collar crime, organized, crime, etc.), in addition to a variety of different criminological theoretical perspectives (biological approaches, sociological approaches, etc.).
For the final writing assignment, you are responsible for selecting a specific criminal case from one of the various crime types that we have covered in Part 3 of this course and explaining/analyzing this crime through one of the various theoretical perspectives we have covered in Part 2.
You must select a specific criminal case to analyze. It can be a famous case, or a more obscure one, just make sure there is at least some news coverage of the case (so you have information you can use for your analysis).
The case should be relatively recent (no older than 10 years). Some exceptions might be made if you have a case that you really want to do that is slightly older, but generally speaking, the more recent, the better.
The case should be Canadian, or possibly American (but try for Canadian).
You must attempt to analyze and explain the crime using one of the various theoretical perspectives we have covered in this course (biological, psychological, sociological, or conflict-based approaches).
Many of these approaches are comprised of specific theories, so be sure to be clear about which approach you are using.
Be sure to outline in detail the crime/case you have chosen, the theoretical perspective you are applying, and how this perspective may potentially be used to ‘explain’ the crime that occurred.
The paper should be about 4 pages in length (not counting title page or references), double-spaced.
Don’t forget to include a title page.
Due before our last lecture on August 4th (6:30pm at the latest).
– You could look at a case of gang violence in Vancouver, and try to explain/analyze is using a sociological theoretical approach.
– You could look at a case of violent crime/assault/murder and try to explain/analyze it using a psychological theoretical perspective.
– You can look at a case of white collar crime and try to explain it using a conflict based theoretical approach.
– And countless others!
