Part 1.
Write a research paper exploring ONE of the following three questions. Draw on specific examples from contemporary sports as well as the scholarly sources you locate in your research to illustrate your argument.
a) How has heterosexuality, as an institution and as an enforced group practice, constrained and limited all of us—gay, straight, and bi? Focus specifically on organized sport.
b) How has the institution of sport been involved in the social construction of hegemonic masculinity?
c) Some scholars have suggested that when men play sports they are almost always automatically granted masculine status, and thus assumed to be heterosexual, while when women play sports, questions are raised about their “femininity” and sexual orientation. Evaluate this observation. Based on your research, do you agree or disagree? Why? Provide concrete examples to support your position.
d) What barriers to participation in organized sports do transgender athletes encounter? What do these barriers, and any social discourses surrounding them, suggest about the social construction of sex and gender?

Part 2
Research Infographic
Scholarly research can be conceptualized as a conversation amongst researchers. When you cite scholarly sources in your research, you participate in the conversation by applying, elaborating upon, asking questions about, and acknowledging the work of others. The infographic need not cover every word of your research paper. Instead, use your infographic to teach your classmates about your research. What should your classmates know about your topic? How can you best display this knowledge visually?
To fulfill the requirements of this assignment, you will need to submit a completed infographic that visually depicts the argument, evidence, and key conclusions of your research paper. As a general guideline, your infographic should contain a minimum of 4 – 6 blocks of material. Remember, if your infographic has too little content, it will not sufficiently address your topic or demonstrate your knowledge. If it has too much content, it will not effectively communicate your knowledge to your audience. For reference, here is an example of an infographic that is too short:

Both of these examples also rely too heavily on text. Examples of effective infographics appear in the What is an Infographic? section, below.
You will be evaluated on how effectively your design allows you to communicate your ideas. Accuracy of content will also be evaluated. You will not be evaluated on achieving word limits in the infographic.
