The supervisor of a medical unit has recently hired several new RNs just out of nursing school. Two of the new RNs have started on the day shift. As an RN with 7 years of experience, you have been assigned to orient and precept one of the new RNs. The new RN will work with you for 3 months.
Information about the experienced RN: You have worked mainly on the medical unit and are considered an expert. You are always on time. You are organized and can be counted on “to get the job done.” You are frequently given all the new employees to orient. You have never complained and you like working with nurses, but you are getting pretty tired of having to be the one who is assigned to orient the new employees all the time.
Information about the new RN: He is in his twenties, quiet but friendly. He works steadily, has a good knowledge base, but has difficulty asking questions. He has managed the care of three patients in school. He was late the first day on the unit and tells the nurse that he “is more of a night person.”
At the end of the 2 weeks, the new RN has not been able to achieve the set goals. The experienced RN sets up a time to meet with the new RN. During the meeting, the new RN is visibly upset.
*As the experienced RN, how would you handle this situation?
