Exploratory / Critical Analysis Essay
Formatting: A five page essay (five full pages minimum, not including the header or Works Cited page) appropriately formatted along MLA conventions. Include an appropriately formatted Works Cited page.
The Assignment: Choose one of the chapters taken from the “Readings” section of They Say, I Say: With Readings, critically read through the selections, and assess which articles best respond to that chapter’s central issue. Starting from the Rhetorical Situation, analyze the articles that most effectively respond to and further your understanding of that issue. Show where the other articles come up short; where the deficits in their discussions are. You are to engage AT LEAST 4 of the sources directly, accommodating and acknowledging good ideas (and explaining why they are good), resisting and rejecting bad ideas (and explaining why they are bad), and negotiating and revising ideas (and explaining how they might best be revised), using examples from the texts to support your claims. Contrast the articles with others in the chapter.
This is not an assignment that asks you to argue your point of view or even whether or not you agree with the premise.
This is an assignment that asks you to ignore your preconceived notions, to disregard your own confirmation bias, and to OBJECTIVELY assess the pieces on their merits. If you note bias in the readings, feel free to note it and explore it; however, this does not fully discount the article, you must still engage with the material on its merits.
You should consider:
· The Rhetorical Situation
· The rhetorical appeals: Logos, Ethos, and Pathos
· The Authority of the author
· The Currency of the piece
· The Reputability of the piece’s initial publisher
· The work’s Voice
· If the author’s personal Biases are showing
· The words used, the logic presented, the general effectiveness of the work.
Draw your evidence from the pieces, and make direct usage of the material, via Direct Quotes, Paraphrases, and most sparingly, Summary. Make certain to use in-text citations to distinguish the thoughts and ideas of the authors from your own.
General Steps for a Successful Essay:
1. Introduce the text you are working with
2. Show how it responds to the central question of the chapter
3. Explain your central argument for whether r not it clearly, adequately responds to the question in a concise statement.
4. Explain/show/deconstruct/analyze the rhetorical elements, logic, facts, statistics, and devices. What specifically is going on that makes this work something we should look at or avoid
5. Use your close reading skills to focus on markedly effective passages. Balance “general” claims about the text with “specific” passages/scenes.
6. Be specific. Be fair. Be direct.
A Quick and easy to follow outline:
o Clearly and concisely define and describe the problem and the argument (the introduction)
o Analyze and explore the first text (Body 1)
§ Summarize the central point of the piece
§ Identify and summarize no fewer than three key positions on the problem
o Analyze and explore the second text (Body 2)
§ Summarize the central point of the piece
§ Identify and summarize no fewer than three key positions on the problem
o Analyze and explore the third text (Body 3)
§ Summarize the central point of the piece
§ Identify and summarize no fewer than three key positions on the problem
o Analyze and explore the fourth text (Body 4)
§ Summarize the central point of the piece
§ Identify and summarize no fewer than three key positions on the problem
o Affirm the position that you most closely favor (the conclusion)
