Although it is a longer work of fiction, the argument can be made that short stories are found within the text of Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis.” Thinking about what we’ve read so far, pick the section that you think would make the best stand-alone short story. Then analyze that section just like we did the other short stories.
Please answer the following questions in your initial post:
What is the theme of your story? In other words, what do you think the story is about? Do not use proverbs or clichés. The theme is not “a penny saved is a penny earned,” or “the grass is always greener on the other side.” A theme is not a message as much as it is a topic.
Plot: What is the most important moment or event in the plot? Why is it the most important? How does it show the story’s theme?
Setting: What is the story’s setting? Consider multiple aspects of time, location, atmosphere, and so forth to discern the role that setting plays in the story’s events. How does it support the story’s theme?
Character: What happens to the main character? How and why? What role do the other characters play in the experience of the main character?
Point of View: What is the story’s point of view? How does the choice of point of view reinforce the story’s theme?
Tone: What is the tone of the story, in setting, narration, action, and dialogue? How does the tone of the story serve to reinforce the story’s theme?
Briefly describe how the plot, characters, setting, point of view, and style all contribute to the story’s theme. Then, answer this question: what is the meaning of the story? What do you think the author is trying to tell us?
