Module 3: Discussion #3 As homework last class, we read Mairéad Pratschke’s article about the early years of Amharc Éireann, the short monthly documentaries shown in cinemas in Ireland. The documentaries were all in the country’s native language, Irish, without subtitles. By using the medium of film in the 1950s, they attempted to show the Irish language as a modern and urban language. However, the topics covered in the documentary at times seemed to indicate that adoption of the English language, the colonial and international language, was the only way forward. Module 5: Discussion #5 We previously discussed that cinema productions were viewed for the most part by those living in big cities. We also know from our notes on the Irish language that those speaking the tongue as their first language lived (and continue to live – majority) in the rural areas. As we now begin to consider films in the Irish language broadcast on the new TV service, RTÉ in the 1960s, our first question will have to be, could those in rural areas view the films at home? In other words, it was great that this minority language, Irish, could be viewed on TV, but were all the TV sets in English-speaking homes only? It would be like when TV was first available in NYC in Spanish, but if only English speakers could access it. The two big considerations would be electricity and broadcast signal. Do a bit of research on the web. Try to figure out when electricity would have been available (to run a TV set) in the western rural areas of Ireland where Irish was/is spoken. Could you plug in a TV in 1960? 1970? … Also, was the RTÉ signal reaching all the homes of Ireland? You do not need to tell the whole story, just a fact or two. See what your classmates have turned up before you post your findings. Give the URL where you found the information. Also you can add in a detail or two regarding the country your people come from (or USA). When was TV first available in the Dominican Republic for example. Did rural homes have electricity to run the TVs? Was the signal available to all regions? Fifty words is plenty on your contribution. We are researching and brainstorming here, not writing an essay.

Module 8: Discussion #7 Bob Quinn’s films took place in the Irish-speaking communities and so use of the Irish language in the films was natural. The Irish language television station established in 1996 was for all Irish people, both those with Irish as their first language and those learning Irish. Today we see films set both in the Irish-speaking communities and those set outside of those communities. Discuss what role you have observed film location to have. Include comments concerning both the films we have seen and articles we have read. You can also comment on your experience with other languages, like Spanish films shot outside the Spanish-speaking neighborhoods of the USA and so on.
