Los Olvidados DISCUSSION
The instructions for this discussion are a little different from others, so please read these carefully.
Because this is our first non-U.S. film, I have included a very small reading to give you a little bit of context about the film and about Mexico City at the time of the making of the film. You don’t necessarily have to quote from this reading in your post, but I want the discussion to be ‘informed’ by this VERY SHORT reading. I would suggest reading it AFTER you have watched the film.
What I would like you to do in this discussion is to think about Los olvidados, without forgetting the fact that we are now in the PERIPHERY of the city, and write about how these characters deal with and ‘navigate’ the city. Don’t forget that we are barely in the ‘center’ of the city–this is an important thing to keep in mind here. Also, think about how the RURAL and the URBAN seem to relate in the film…
ALSO, because this is the first time that we are dealing with issues of SOCIAL CLASS, I want you to keep in mind these two quotes. Once again, you may use these in the discussion, if you think they would help:
“The real predicament of the poor is that they must suffer the insult of oblivion.”
Hannah Arendt
“The poor man’s conscience is clear, yet he is ashamed. He feels himself out of the sight of others, groping in the dark. Mankind takes no notice of him; he rambles and wanders unheeded.
He is not disapproved, censured, or reproached: he is only not seen. This total inattention is to him mortifying, painful, and cruel.
To be overlooked, and to know it, are intolerable.”
John Adams, Second President of the United States
[if there are words in these quotes that you don’t know–look them up!]
Unit 5: Introducing Los Olvidados [READ THIS BEFORE VIEWING FILM]
In geopolitics, there is a very interesting term: the PERIPHERY. In the context of urban studies, the periphery refers to the margins of the city–sometimes the literal margins, the outskirts, sometimes the social margins, the outcasts of the city. Our next film is set in that periphery. . .
Los olvidados–The Forgotten, in English–was directed by a man called Luis Buñuel, born in Spain though he lived most of his life in Mexico and France. It came out in 1950 and it deals with street children in the modernizing Mexico City of that time.
Buñuel is an interesting figure. He began as a SURREALIST filmmaker! His college roommate was Salvador Dalí!! (so you can imagine those parties!) But the film we are watching in this unit was made within the constraints of STUDIO production in Mexico. So the film is a bit of a tug-of-war between his surrealist origins and his requirements as a ‘studio’ director.
The movie you’re about to see will be hard to watch for some. In a way, it’s a very cruel film, but it is also a film that looks at the periphery without sentimentality….. This movie breaks my heart, but I think it’s a very interesting film.
