“Lanval,” Marie De France
“The Wife of Bath’s Prologue” by Geoffrey Chaucer
“General Prologue” from The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
Write a literary analysis essay (1000 – 1250 words) on 1 story from the list above. You can discuss any aspects of the story including its literary devices: conflicts/tensions, plot, characterization, figurative language, setting, themes, etc. If you’re struggling with where to start, look back through the notes/videos/discussions we’ve had on these stories. If you’d like to Bb conference with me to brainstorm a story and some devices to analyze, send me an email, and we can schedule a time to meet. I’d love to help you anyway I can.
For this essay, you MUST find a current conflict/tension/phenomena that relates to your story. To do so, I’d like you to use Tedtalk’s website. On, you can explore videos on a myriad of current issues: scientific, social, psychological, cultural, racial, political, etc. After selecting a story from above, consider the conflicts, themes, characters, settings, etc. within it. For example, in France’s story, “Lanval,” the protagonist is a knight for King Arthur and also a foreigner. A modern connection you could explore is dual-citizenship or immigration. Lanval is also rescued by a woman at the end of the story, so France’s story is also a work of feminism. Furthermore, after refusing to be Queen Guinevere’s beau on the side, Lanval is accused of being gay. In this way, France is also exploring extra-marital affairs, monogamy, and sexuality.
A big part of this essay is making connections between the ideas you hear in your video and those in your story in order to identify similarities and differences between them. More than that, I want you to find a video that gives you a deeper appreciation for the story you’ve chosen, a more acute understanding of its characters, a more relatable example of its themes, etc. Ultimately, you should understand your story more profoundly which should reveal itself in your analysis. To show this, you’ll need to quote both media (the Ted Talk and the story).
