For this task you will be writing an argumentative research essay on the following prompt:
Is happiness a choice, or does it depend on outside factors that might be out of our control?
Your goals will be:
● To respond to the prompt with a precise argumentative thesis statement (claim).
● To demonstrate in-depth and insightful analysis of your selected sources to support your thesis statement.
● To include relevant and specific evidence to support your argument and to distinguish your argument from alternate or opposing ones.
You will use the four phases of the writing process— brainstorming, outlining, writing, and revising— to ensure that your essay has all of the components listed in the checklist below.
Requirements:
Your essay must:
● Respond directly to the prompt with a precise and thoughtful thesis statement (claim)
● Include reasons that support your thesis statement.
● Present your ideas fully and thoughtfully, using at least SIX pieces of evidence from FOUR different sources
● Demonstrate proper use of parenthetical citation.
● Be about 900 words (although you can certainly write more if you’d like!)
● Include an introductory paragraph, at least FIVE body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph.
● Demonstrate genuine analysis, interpretation, and insight (aka your own original ideas!).
● Be written in a formal style and sophisticated style
● Have a creative title
● Generally follow the rules of punctuation, grammar, and spelling
