According to Kopf (2019), “there has been an urge to focus more on treatment and less on punishment in the approach to the opioid crisis”. The big problem is that an overwhelmingly large majority of jails and prisons in this country are failing to provide life-saving medications for people dealing with opioid disorders. This is not only unethical and harmful to jail inmates, but it is also illegal. The way to address this is to hold these jails accountable for their actions and to have jails and prisons offer FDA approved medications to treat opioid disorders for Jail inmates. The poor woman was arrested for criminally trespassing. This one hits home for me because I was too once homeless and had to live in my car for a few months before I was able to get back on my feet so I can definitely sympathize with this woman. This situation was definitely mishandled and one of the ways this can be changed is if their is education on how to treat individuals dealing with mental health illnesses such as Schizophrenia. The bottom line is the jails and prisons need to understand how to work and take care of the mentally ill even if they are incarcerated. As a society, we should be demanding action be taken as this is inhumane and unethical. If these inmates are left untreated with their mental illness then their condition can only worsen. My point is that everyone has a right to medical care and this pertains to individuals dealing with mental health illnesses just as it pertains to other medical illnesses such as diabetes or cancer.
