In this assignment, you will write a paper that compares and contrasts two stories from the four assigned ( “A & P” 163-167, “Boys and Girls” 152-162, “Araby” 288-292, and “The Lesson” 146-151) and focuses on the theme of initiation. Write a paper in which you compare and contrast two (not all four) of the short stories assigned for this week. Write a paper in which you compare and contrast two (not all four) of the short stories assigned for this week. This paper is similar to last week’s paper in that it includes an analysis of these narrative devices:the plot (and conflict), the characterization (including static or dynamic designation), the setting, and the symbols and/or figurative language in each short story. Please use the following outline to organize your essay. The sample introduction paragraph and model thesis statement use two stories not part of our assignment. Make sure to choose two stories from our assigned readings, and adapt the introduction, thesis statement, and outline to your stories. Please note that the outline is not the assignment; you are to write an essay, but having an outline will help you know what comes next. The essay should be in MLA format (in-text citations and Works Cited), and it should include multiple passages from both stories used as evidence (minimum 4 for each story). It will likely take a minimum of 3 pages to do this essay well, not counting the works cited page. See rubric for grading details
I. Introduction ending in thesis statement:
Women who lived in the nineteenth century often struggled for agency over their own lives. In the short story “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, the main character is a woman, Louise Mallard, who suffers from a weak heart which can reflect her overall unhappiness with her marriage and her life. In the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, the female protagonist (who might be named Jane) is also unwell, suffering from depression and dominated by her husband.
