Goals: Your goal is to articulate a specific position on your environmental topic and support that claim with thoughtfully constructed arguments.
Format: Your essay must be between eightand ten pages, not including the Works Cited/References Page. You must make use of at least eight sources. Your supporting texts must come from a variety of sources, and the majority should be primary/documentary and scholarly sources; the exact ratio will be determined on a case-by-case basis. All formal assignments should be in Modern Language Association (MLA) format, typed and double spaced using 12-point Times New Roman typeface, with 1’’ margins all around. Use the latest edition of MLA style guidelines to cite and properly document sources. Method: The method here is less linear than it is recursive. In other words, you will need to go back and forth between at least four different activities as you work on this project: 1) Research, 2) Invention, 3) Arrangement, 4) Refinement.
Research: Even though most of your research is already complete, you will likely find gaps as you start inventing and arranging your argument. Be sure to return to this work when need be. This is why you may bring in new sources (and get rid of others) at any time.
Invention: Also, much of your invention/inquiry work will likely be done at this point. But, as you move forward, new research and/or new ways of arranging or refining your arguments will demand that you re-invent new arguments. Be sure to return to this work when need be.
Arrangement: Before the essay is due, you will have spent time considering different ways of arranging your arguments into a cohesive whole. But, as you fill new research gaps, invent new arguments, and refine existing writing, you will likely need to reconsider how you arrange your essay. Be sure to return to this work as need be.
Refinement: Again, we will have already spent class time considering the style of your essay. Keep in mind that style is not the fancy stuff added at the introduction and conclusion. Style is a strategy informing not only how you construct your argument, but also how you situate your argument in relation to others (i.e. Burke’s “unending conversation”). Also, get in the habit of reading your essay aloud with pen in hand, preferably to a friend or classmate. The longer you spend on this essay, the more the words will start to flow and the easier it will be for you to identify and revise awkward, clumsy sentence structures.
