o It must absolutely be turned-in through Turnit In in Blackboard, no email submissions will be accepted. Containing minimal information does not guarantee an A grade, must put effort in researching substantial information (see scoring rubric on page 3)
o No plagiarism, everything must be in your own words, in-text cited, and referenced–no direct “quoting”, paraphrase any information cited. Similarity score must be less than or equal to 25.
o No bullets, or list type formats of any kind, use complete sentences and organize information in paragraph style in the order shown in the rubric, using APA headings for sections only (roman numerals in outline). Organize the information into distinct paragraphs for each subsection within a section, in the order shown in the rubric.
o Use APA 7th edition style format. No use of informal first/second person, ie: do not use “you” or “I” or “we”. Always write in the formal third person or passive voice. Must include an abstract after cover page. The abstract must follow APA guidelines and must be a concise summary of the microbe and disease, not a summary of what you did in the paper.
o Personal thoughts must contain an idea or solution related to research, education or prevention, not just simply what you think about it, and must be at least be 150 words. The microbe name must be in italics, use full name the first time, abbreviate subsequently. Ie: Clostridium difficile, then C. difficile
o Morphology: Bacteria: Shape, size, gram status if bacteria, does it have a capsule, does it have flagella (one or more?), endospore former?, biofilm former? Viruses: shape, size, does it have an envelope?, is the genetic material DNA or RNA?, ds or ss?. Fungi, protozoa, parasites: shape, size, life stages. Your first step is to determine what kind of microbe it is so that you can research the correct information.
o Metabolism: Bacteria: oxygen requirements, cellular/acellular respiration, fermenter?, glucose, lactose, sucrose, mannitol fermenter? Starch hydrolysis? Citrate producer?, indole producer?, use hydrogen sulfide?, nitrate reducer?, catalase and oxidase positive or negative?, motile? Acid producer? Viruses: do not have their own metabolism, explain to me why in this section. Viruses also dramatically alter host cell metabolism, explain how yours does: glycolysis inducer? Fatty acid synthesis inducer? Glutaminolysis inducer? If you have a protozoan parasite or worm or fungi, you still need to find information about their metabolism, even if not specific as above.
o Environmental growth conditions: Bacteria: aerobic, anaerobic, facultative anaerobic, microaerophile, or aerotolerant? Acidophile/neutrophile/alkalinophile? Mesophile/thermophile/psychrophile? Where does it like to live? Airborne, waterborne, foodborne? Viruses: infect particular cells, so in this section you would explain to me what kind of cells or tissues they target, same for parasites or fungi.
o Substitute section title “pathogenic microorganism” with the name of your microbe, and “disease” with the name of the disease your microbe causes. I.e.: “Description of Vibrio cholerae”, “Epidemiology of cholera”. Do not title subsections
