)Class Conversation 6-Changing the Story: Exploring Domestic Violence Issues in America
First, you will need to watch two short films.
“Telling Amy’s Story” is the telling of the real-life account and examination of a woman named Amy provided below.
Please note this is not the full movie but is a condensed version of the 60-minute film. The full documentary is available through PBS. This website provides resources and other helpful information–please review and share!!
Full Documentary and Website: Penn State University Amy’s Story. ( http://telling.psu.edu/index.html)
TEDTalk: Why Domestic Violence Victims Don’t Leave, is an incredible talk by domestic violence survivor, Leslie Morgan Steiner, who shares her story and discusses the deep secrets and challenges of DV. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1yW5IsnSjo)
After watching these short videos…
What are your initial thoughts and reactions to these two women’s stories?
What impressed and stood out to you as you listened to these two different stories of domestic violence?
Be specific and not generic in your responses.
Next, with what you have learned from Amy and Leslie’s stories AND chapter 12 in addition to any personal experience you may have and are willing to share:
What do you think is or are the greatest problem(s) concerning Domestic Violence?
Remember, there is no definite answer. This is to encourage you to think critically about what you have learned (or may have experienced) about domestic violence and what strike you the most.
What are possible solutions: focusing on prevention, better treatment, better intervention, and/or working on more effective legislation…?
What is the real “take-home” message or most important lesson learned for you? Please do not hesitate to share personal experiences–we need to hear them!
Finally, in reflecting over the videos and entire course concerning what we have learned about relationships:
What do you think we can do to help promote healthy relationships in general and hopefully minimize and prevent such abuse from continuing and maybe even change the ending of someone else’s story?
Post your initial post and four peer replies by clicking on reply.
As always remember to:
APPLY/INTEGRATE course material from chapter 12 and the two videos in addition to any other information you would like to use to support and explain your views–this is always imperative!
Remember to cite ALL sources used: the video and textbook material in addition to any other resources you may include from your own research.
Be sure to post to at least 4 others in this discussion.
Keep in mind: your original post to this prompt is worth up to 10 points and your 4 peer responses are worth up to 4 points (1 point for each response). This makes the total points for this discussion worth 14 points.
